The authenticity of A DIFFERENT MAN leaps off the screen and the leading men are brilliantly juxtaposed—where you're seeing a storyline from different points of view. Evolving circumstances create scenes that constantly challenge human virtues, which are vulnerable to both our cruelest and kindest impulses.
Sebastian Stan's performance is among the best of his career. He has a strong sense of who he is and what he can portray, and that kind of integrity is evident in his portrayal of Edward. The contrast and power dynamics between Edward’s pre- and post-reconstructive procedure are vividly conveyed through his body language. The transitions Stan navigates are truly incredible. This, to me, represents the apex of great film acting.
I can easily recognize Mike Marino's work as a makeup artist. I did a quick fact-check, and he indeed transformed Sebastian Stan in "A Different Man" and Colin Farrell into the Penguin. I predict he’ll be in line for Oscar and Emmy nominations!

The performances throughout are remarkably authentic, particularly Adam Pearson as Oswald. He brings a welcome blend of humor and warmth with his confident demeanor, infectious laughter, and sharp wit. Pearson's singing voice is raw and possesses a dangerous sensuality that works with his character.
Side Note: I was pleased to learn that Adam Pearson appreciated my review, particularly my observations on his "dangerous sensuality." He generously shared it on his page and A24, which was a wonderful surprise. It’s always gratifying to connect with artists who value thoughtful critique.
Directed and written by Aaron Schimberg, the film provides a visceral experience, delving into the uncomfortable realities of disabilities and complex female sexuality. Schimberg approaches the material with direct sensitivity, capturing attention and provoking thought. His skill in presenting grand themes with genuine intimacy and sensitivity is a remarkable achievement few filmmakers can match.
A Different Man will have a limited release on September 20 and will be released nationwide on October 4.
