SONO LINO examines the life and work of Maestro Lino Tagliapietra, one of the most prominent and legendary glassblowers in history. As he approaches retirement, Lino invites us into his world, providing a glimpse into his remarkable 70 years of experience. Despite this extensive career, Lino has never truly worked a day in his life. He has been fortunate enough to dedicate himself to something he loves, demonstrating that when you follow your passion, work can feel like a joy rather than a burden. An inspiration, Lino moves through life with grace, focusing on his own path and sharing his humor wherever he goes. Ultimately, the connections he makes with others—are what keep him alive.
The title "Maestro" is often used casually, losing its true significance, but in Lino’s case, it is well earned. This elegant film marks the directorial documentary debut of Jacob Patrick, expertly showcasing Maestro Lino's artistry, highlighting the notion that “you can imitate the man, but his soul is in his hands.” From his early Italian roots, it’s evident that Lino was always an eager learner, despite leaving school. He took it upon himself to educate and learn from his teachers and mentors. He began his journey as an apprentice glassblower at just 11 years old, under the expert guidance of the renowned maestro Archimede Seguso. Lino is an inspiration for students across various sectors as they develop resilience and overcome challenges in their quest to surpass their advisors and mentors.
Lino attributes his success to the diverse teams he's worked with throughout the years, highlighting his preference for collaboration over solitary work. He aspired to reach the level of excellence of those around him and selflessly shared his expertise with others. Maestro Lino embodies quality; as a purveyor of the finest food, travel, and experiences, he embraces an epicurean lifestyle, always holding himself to the same standard. This same trust extends to director Jacob Patrick, creating a sense of breaking the fourth wall, allowing us to see that same quality reflected in Patrick himself.
As the documentary unfolds, we see that age is the primary reason Lino can no longer pursue glassblowing. Reflecting on this decision, he recognizes that the time is approaching, especially as his team advances in their own careers, branching out and embracing entrepreneurial pursuits. In 2023, Lino hinted at his retirement, but with a playful smile and a smirk, he adds, “you never know.”
