Nicole’s Review: ★★★★★

"His Three Daughters" is an immaculate and nuanced exploration of grief that resonates deeply. The film centers on three sisters, each embodying a different approach to life and loss: one is a jazz cabbage enthusiast, played by Natasha Lyonne; another is calm and collected, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen; and the third is self-righteous, brought to life by Carrie Coon.

The narrative unfolds in a way that emphasizes the complexities of their grief, showcasing how each sister navigates this emotional landscape in her own unique way. The film's structure reveals exposition early on, building tension and anticipation for the heart-wrenching moments that inevitably come. These scenes are powerful, evoking a sense of vulnerability that leaves the audience feeling profoundly affected.

The film is a sterling showcase of Azazel Jacobs' mastery in direction. His direction is marked by his signature somber lighting and dramatic sweeps of the New York City backdrop, which beautifully complement the film's themes of loss and connection. The casting choices are particularly striking; the sisters don’t resemble one another, a deliberate choice that highlights their differences and individual struggles.

The performances are enthralling from beginning to end, and it’s a true pleasure to witness Natasha Lyonne artfully breathe life into her character, Rachel, with extraordinary precision. Sadness and grief rank among the most formidable emotions to depict on screen; nonetheless, her character navigates her anguish with resilience. She infused the role with a charming nonchalance and a sharp sense of humor that kept the film invigorating.

This extraordinary, slow-paced film embraces a profoundly introspective approach, relying on the compelling personalities of its stars rather than on action. It is within this framework that Elizabeth Olsen truly excels, being both breathtaking and remarkably demonstrative, emotionally and physically. Elizabeth infuses her performance with a strikingly ethereal quality, adeptly capturing the tumult of emotions with impressive depth.

Carrie Coon's performance is a fluctuation of perspectives. The intricacy of her character intensifies as her awareness of events and her blindness to certain truths propel the narrative.

Ultimately, "His Three Daughters" is not just a story about familial bonds; it's a poignant reflection on the diverse ways we cope with the inevitability of death. The film leaves you feeling emotionally clobbered yet enriched by its raw honesty and empathy.

He married a couple crazy bitches, raised a couple crazy bitches.
