Saturday Night: A Review of Reitman's 70s-Inspired Comedy Starring Gabriel LaBelle!

September 24th, 2024

Presented and specially invited by Sony Pictures

Saturday Night, directed by Jason Reitman, represents Hollywood's first depiction of SNL in the '70s. This film masterfully captures the essence of a groundbreaking era in comedy, showcasing the riotous creation scenes that highlight the legacy of SNL. The film offers the new generation a valuable insight into peak comedy, revealing the humor and cultural significance that shaped the landscape of television. The lead cast, including Gabriel LaBelle, Rachael Sennott, Lamorne Morris, and Dylan O'Brien, delivers a professional simulation of the time, immersing the audience in their roles. Each actor brings their unique flair, contributing to a perfect ensemble that truly embodies the spirit of 1970s television. With sharp wit and their acting prowess, Saturday Night not only entertains but also pays tribute to the influential artists who shaped the world of comedy.

Congratulations to Jason Reitman and the team! Dreams really do come true—last night marked their first screening at the historical Vista Theatre, showcasing Saturday Night in 35mm for the first time.

Cinematographer Eric Steelberg crafts a fluid pace, as the film beats out in a fast-cut style. With each passing minute, the tension from last-minute changes intensifies. The costumes in Saturday Night were a true homage to peak '70s fashion, featuring perfect stitching that captured the era's essence. Each outfit was delicately paired with hairstyling that reflected the authentic looks of the time, enhancing the overall aesthetic. Minimalist makeup completed the ensemble beautifully, with no acrylics in sight, allowing the actors to embody their characters in a carefree and natural way. In a world where times were much simpler, this attention to detail truly transported the audience back to the vibrant spirit of the 1970s.

Gabriel LaBelle stands unrivaled in his role; there is simply no one better suited to take on Lorne Michaels. Having previously portrayed Sammy Fabelman in Steven Spielberg's biopic The Fabelmans, LaBelle navigates chaos and stress with artistry and precision in Saturday Night. This role positions him as a strong contender for Best Actor nominations this awards season, solidifying his Hollywood presence and ensuring that he's here to stay.

In addition, I had the pleasure of reuniting with Gabriel at the premiere. Catching his attention, we exchanged smiles that brought back fond memories of our time working on The Fabelmans

Dylan O'Brien plays legendary comedian Dan Aykroyd, recreating an original sketch that teaches a group of female construction workers how to objectify men.

You can always count on Andy Kaufman to save the day. Nicholas Braun’s performance was so outstanding that it evoked a wave of emotions, reminding us of the genius of the late comedian. It was a wonderful tribute that truly felt like a masterpiece!

Saturday Night doesn't simply end; it ignites a desire to delve into past episodes as soon as you’ve finished watching! The film opens exclusively in select LA and NY theaters on September 27, with a wider release on October 11.

Is Saturday Night Worth Watching? YES.
