Will and Harper: Celebrating Harper Steele, a Girl's Best Friend

September 28th, 2024

Thank you to Netflix for the invitation to the exclusive screening at the DGA.

Will and Harper showcased transparency and a gentle reminder that the world isn't black and white. Acknowledging one's existence and the quest for happiness is the root of progress. We often question others, asking why this or that—sometimes it’s not about understanding but simply about what is.

Harper Steele, formerly Andrew Steele, transitioned late in life, feeling she had never been born in the right body. Prior to her transition, she enjoyed a successful career as the head writer for SNL, traveled freely and built a family. In 2022, Harper wrote letters to her loved ones detailing her transition. One of those letters was sent to her best friend and frequent collaborator, funnyman Will Ferrell. Harper recalls that Ferrell was understanding and empathetic as they moved forward. He suggested a road trip to help ease the uncomfortable questions and to help Harper regain her comfort in the places she once enjoyed visiting alone. The documentary navigates her transition and amplifies the voices of the transgender and intersex communities, bringing essential awareness to those who may not understand their experiences.

Harper also has a comedic flair of her own, so don’t think Ferrell upstages her. She loves road life, truck stops, beer, sports, and crass humor—truly a girl's best friend. Her witty comebacks and one-ups are a testament to their 30-year friendship. In conversation with director Josh Greenbaum, he notably recalled how transitioning is about learning to love yourself. He reiterated that this applies to everyone, and all of us should adopt the same mindset to grow and flourish. This sentiment truly resonates with audiences, as we all have to work through self-love at some point in our lives, whether on a consistent basis or sporadically.

We witness Will and Harper visit numerous stops along a scenic journey on Route 66. The route was impeccable and provided space for thinking, processing, and reflection for both of them. There are a few surprising cameos from the SNL crew, as well as a beautifully written song performed by Kristen Wig. Greenbaum noted that he filmed five hours of footage, which was trimmed down to a little under two minutes. Perhaps, this may leave room for a director's cut in the near future.

Will and Harper emphasize the importance of acceptance and love for everyone, regardless of their identity. The story moved me beyond words, highlighting the significance of understanding and compassion in creating a more inclusive society.
