NIGHTBITCH is a powerful reminder that you are the goddess of the burning flame! Based on the best-selling novel by Rachel Yoder, the film challenges the audience by evoking a primal response, prompting a retrospective reflection on that burning inner flame. Amy Adams liberates the wild woman within by reclaiming her power. In the film, she plays a character simply referred to as "Mother," a housewife devoted to caring for her toddler. The narrative delves into realism by exploring the inner divine feminine and the intimacy of human nature, depicted through Mother's transformation into a dog. This transformation unfolds gradually, with subtle signs indicating the changes to come.

Adams showcases that every woman's soul is unique, and because of that, we must prioritize ourselves—we are works of art in our own right. The film challenges us to reflect on what we're nurturing in our lives right now, whether it’s our children, careers, relationships, or a new passion.

For some, the film also underscores the idea that choosing not to have children is a valid and empowering choice. It challenges traditional narratives and affirms that a woman's worth and fulfillment are not solely tied to motherhood. As women, we are naturally inclined to create and nurture, always seeking to bring something meaningful into fruition. This film resonates with the essence of reclaiming one's own path and embracing the diverse ways in which women contribute to the world.

While it’s always a pleasure to see Amy Adams grace our screens, it’s important to spotlight the remarkable performance of Zoe Chao. Playing the role of Jen, an endearing mother and loyal friend, every scene feels richer. It’s not necessarily the dialogue, but the emotional undertones and subtle expressions that shape her character. Her smile is more than an expression; it’s a beacon of warmth, lighting up every scene she’s in and filling the audience with hope.

With that being said, during a conversation at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Zoe was highlighted as one of Variety's Actors to Watch for 2024. I asked Zoe about pushing boundaries in her craft and future work. Zoe responded, “I'm always trying to put life first and career second, which is really hard. Many of us identify with the work that we do, and for me, the healthier brain and heart are spent with family.” Zoe is commended for balancing both aspects of her life, and as she puts it, “I’m trying.” It’s important to remember that effort is a victory in itself. Trying is all we can do, and that alone is enough.

It’s also a poignant reminder that, as artists, women can’t afford to neglect their creative passions. While there are multiple and unforeseen influences at work within our lives, NIGHTBITCH will suit every woman equally. In 2024, we're seeing a wave of films that encourage women to embrace their full potential, reminding us not to limit our desires or needs.
